Elite Men's Statistics - Australian Nationals

by Peter Karas
Feb 8, 2011 at 21:57

After a Pro Bike Check at the last Australian National Round, this race we poll the entire Elite Men's field (40 racers) to check out their set ups and hardware. The results are interesting!

If you missed the Pro Bike Check, you can review it here. That was undertaken at the Mount Baw Baw National round, now for the third round at Mount Buller we poll all Elite Men Riders (40 racers). The results may just surprise you;

Choices choices choices
Choices choices choices

The frame is surely the most critical mechanical part at this level of downhill racing;

Specialized 22%
Santa Cruz 16%
Giant 14%
Trek 5%
Banshee 5%
Kona 5%
Orange 5%
Transition 5%
Turner 5%
Commencal 5%
Intense 3%
Yeti 3%
Mondraker 3%
Morewood 3%

Interesting that Santa Cruz feature more highly than Giant, as Giant are often regarded as the most common downhill bike on the Australian racing circuit. Maybe Elite represents more serious riders who are prepared to spend more on a bike? The addition of Sam Hill, Brendan Fairclough and Troy Brosnan to the team has clearly paid off for the big S though. Suspending these frames are a range of rear shocks, Fox clearly streaks ahead in terms of numbers though.

Fox 80%
Rock Shox 8%
Manitou 3%
Marzocchi 3%
Bos 3%
Elka 3%

The fork situation was more balanced than the rear shocks and provided no surprises as Boxxers have been the fork of choice on the Australian circuit for years.

RockShox Boxxers 53%
Fox 40's 31%
Marzocchi 888's 8%
Bos Idylle 5%
Manitou Dorado 3%

It would be cool to have your initials on your forks!
It would be cool to have your initials on your forks!

Drivetrain components / gears really only has two options;

SRAM 78%
Shimano 22%

Braking was another area where SRAM was victorious, with their Avid choices (the few SRAM XO brakes have been placed in the Avid percentage);

Avid 72%
Shimano 14%
Formula 14%

You will notice the SRAM group of companies (SRAM, RockShox, Truvativ & Avid) have essentially dominated their particular fields. I don't wish to speculate, so I talked to riders that used these parts, but were not sponsored by SRAM to see why they made this choice. Aside from performance, the most notable comment was the fact that SRAM have a presence at every National Round, meaning any damaged/faulty parts can be easily fixed/swapped. After paying for travel, accommodation, race entry, etc. the last thing racers want is to have a DNS or DNF due to a part failing, so they vote with their wallets.

Tyres was the choice where the percentage market share was the biggest. Maxxis tyres firmly have the lead in this department. Again rider's comments were that Maxxis are affordable, easy to find and have a good range of treads.

Maxxis 86%
Specialized 10%
Schwable 4%

The field that often draws the most debate is pedals, clips Vs flats, in this case flats were the most prevalent, but note that Bryn Atkinson and Troy Brosnan both won on clips!

Flats 64%
Clips 36%

Troy clips in with these Crankbrothers pedals.
Troy clips in with these Crankbrothers pedals.

At World Champs at MSA, Quebec we did a bunch of stats and here those are for comparison sakes:

Part One - Frames, Tires, Suspension, Shoe/pedal combos, Neck Brace - Yes/No, Brand of Helmets, Brakes, and Drive Train (Shifter/Rear Derailleur Combos)

Part Two - Tires, Armor, Wheels, Rotors, Gearing, Relationships, Energy Drinks, Tubes Y/N

if you take that flat vs clip percentage, and do it again by the end of 2012, the percentage will be much higher for clips, almost even. many people are starting to get into them, just my opinion

@b4lyf, people have been racing DH in clips for many years now - it is not like riders will 'discover' clips and make the switch.

In fact, many years ago many, many people ran clips for DH: I think the sticky rubber on the 5.10s changed all that (like they did for me and I race enduros/XC).

The high proportion of flats could mean that riders who switch between clips and flats thought that flats would be faster on that particular track. On a more 'pedally' track, you may see a rise in the proportion of people using clips.

yes, very much agreed. im just saying, as myself, i never pictured being in clips, and suddenly i have jumped into them, as well as a lot more racers. i know they've been around for a while, i mean that 510s had a huge boom on their flats, but i think clips are definately coming back into the sport

cane creek are quite rare i don't even know any sites that sell them let alone see anyone running one apart from the new nukeproof. the clips vs flats thing i know that one race this year on the WC where pretty much everyone racing was using 5.10s because the track was so slippy but they normally wear clips because they can pedal harder and therefore go faster but most people dont like using them as its harder to take your feet off

The bad period for Marzocchi was 2007-08. From 2009 onwards they sorted their sh*t out. I've been running a pair of 2009 888 RC3's for quite some time now and they certainly haven't exibited any of the issues seen on the models from the previous two years. It's great to see them back on form, especially since the over-haul of certain elements in 2010.

flag kbrock (Feb 9, 2011 at 12:33)
This is not to say that SRAM is of any less quality than Shimano or vice versa, but I think in general when riders are at that high a level of competitive racing, going through parts all the time and regularly maintaining, they go with a balance of whatever is particularly inexpensive but reliable, and let the talent take care of the rest. (Even though Shimano parts may be way nicer, both get the job done).

Unless of course, they're fully sponsored.
  • + 2
flag hustler  (Feb 9, 2011 at 21:13)
I think what happens is also that SRAM/Truvativ/Avid controls a lot of the OEM spec on DH bikes.

Look at a Demo for example. If you break a derailleur, and don't have cash to needlessly burn on parts, you're going to get another SRAM derailleur so you can keep your shifter.

  • + 2
flag TeeRex (Feb 9, 2011 at 12:37)
Yeah, you can get Minion 40s as cheap as $40 here, especially at races. This is by far the most common DH tyre in Aus racing, they work well in our (usually, but not so much lately) dry conditions

Okay this is interesting, but it's also completely useless information,

Reading the article and looking at the figures you are given no indication of who is sponsored, supported by these companies or their local bike shop that's pushing a certain product.

There are many factors that affect why a person is running a certain piece of kit, price, availability and serviceability.
I see a lot of riders are running Fox 40s, is that because they prefer them to other forks, or is it because they are cheaper in Aus, have a better service network, marketed more heavily down there, more Fox supported riders?

Without this kind of information the stats tell you nothing. That said I am glad to see this type of article and would love to see much more properly done pieces of research in the public domain on equipment, safety, training etc.

Peace out.
  • + 1
flag rstwosix (Feb 13, 2011 at 3:33)
Yes, you're right. An essential part of the equation is how many of the 40 riders are sponsored and are obliged to use the components they are supplied with. Also how many non sponsored riders have just purchased a bike and are riding it with the stock parts it came with, but would rather be using something else if and when they can afford it?

BOS importer has sponsored riders in it (morewood/bos team), dont think the manitou crew do and they suffered a bad rap over the last few years, Im one of those people would to see more variation that just the boxxers. Our X-fusion/Solid team is all u19/17's focusing on the development of them. Alot of younger riders are going to schwalbe tyres as well. We tried to organize some dorados, but never had any luck on that front..so they run boxxers at the moment.

and I'd be curious to see if the u19 is the same case: SRAM corp droid co. is huge in Aus, also due to shimano being cheaper than trade cost overseas/service being below par for the high end gear. I remember calling them and being told Saint cranks dont come in an 83mm from Shimano Aus, they swore black and blue. So we got them OS...

And yep. hope has been stupidly expensive here, but their getting bigger with CRC being so cheap with them, I love my v2s; their just a level above anything else.
